Surgical Preparation & Recovery

Physical therapy before and after surgery can help you prepare for the demands of recovery, restore movement and strength, and return to everyday activities more confidently. Care is individualized for people preparing for or recovering from abdominal, pelvic, gynecologic, prostate, cancer-related, or orthopedic procedures.

Concerns We Can Address

Before surgery, physical therapy can help you understand what to expect, practice movements you may need during recovery, and prepare your body and home for temporary changes in mobility. Care may include strengthening, breathing exercises, education about movement precautions, and strategies for getting in and out of bed, using stairs, lifting, or completing daily activities.

After surgery, physical therapy may help address pain, stiffness, weakness, reduced mobility, scar sensitivity, changes in posture or movement, pelvic-floor concerns, and difficulty returning to work, exercise, caregiving, or recreation. Treatment is coordinated with your surgeon’s instructions and the appropriate stage of healing.

How Physical Therapy May Help

Your individualized treatment plan may include mobility exercises, progressive strengthening, breathing and pressure-management strategies, core and pelvic-floor coordination, scar-management education, and modifications for daily activities. We can also review your home environment and available equipment to make recovery safer and more manageable.

The goal is to give you practical tools that support healing and help you gradually rebuild your ability to move, lift, exercise, and complete everyday tasks independently.

What to Expect

All new patients begin with a private, one-on-one telehealth evaluation. During this visit, we will discuss your procedure, medical history, current symptoms or limitations, home environment, and recovery goals. We will assess relevant movement and function and develop a personalized plan that follows your surgical precautions and provider recommendations.

Follow-up care may continue through telehealth or include an in-home appointment near Apex, North Carolina, when additional physical assessment, home-based movement training, scar assessment, or hands-on treatment would be beneficial. Telehealth appointments are available to patients located in North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and Florida.
